Faced with the work of two organists randomly interlaced through 15 tracks of unrelated musical material, one way to make sense of this disc is to make playlists for each musician. This exposes David Davies’s Handel (Hornpipe), Reger (Toccata), Bach (Bist du bei mir), Vierne (Berceuse) and Johnson (Trumpet Tune in A) selections mainly as potboilers, while those of Katherine Dienes-Williams bring novelty at least in Calvin Hampton’s At the Ballet, Tarik O’Regan’s Colimaçon and Guy Bovet’s frankly dreadful Salamanca. Listening to the recorded sound of Guildford’SIV/76 Rushworth and Dreaper organ brought to mind a picture of a dull and tarnished brass instrument rather than one of gleaming brilliance – maybe it is one of those energy-sapping organs you occasionally come across, or a consequence of some excessively heavy registrations, but in the event this is a disc in which, in spite of everyone’s best efforts, no heather is set on fire.
