Having been organist in residence for 35 years until 2010 (and now organist emeritus), John Scott Whiteley knows York Minister’s much-remodelled grand organ as intimately as anyone. This collection of 20th-century French organ suites puts it through its paces with a highly contrasted programme pitting Milhaud’s lavish Petite suite against Duruflé’s texturally complex but graceful op.5 Suite, the striking classical-impressionist miscegenation of Widor’s Trois nouvelles pièces against the vivacious contrapuntalism of Dupré’s op.36 Prelude & Fugue in A flat, and, adding novelty and spice, the Richard Strauss-infused Six petits préludes by Belgian composer Désiré Pâque. Whiteley provides elegant performances throughout, and informative notes.
