Götz Friedrich’s 1993 production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg for the Deutsche Oper became something of an instant classic, so it’s good to have it recorded on film. Friedrich balances the cosy world of the Meistersingers against a view of the fate that would overtake Nürnberg in the Second World War, so the viewers’ sense of narrative is always one step ahead, their moral compass equally engaged. His work with his cast paid massive dividends. Wolfgang Brendel’s Sachs is a great assumption, rich in character and voice, and the Meistersingers are each drawn with precise affection but not parodied. Gösta Winbergh’s Walther is a passionate dreamer with a golden tenor; Eva Johansson’s Eva is knowing and lively. Eike Wilm Schulte’s Beckmesser successfully walks the line between being gratingly annoying and at the same time exuding pathos. Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos’s conducting is warm and spacious and aids the whole performance to unfold with a natural flow.
