This hugely pleasurable recording shines a light on the mystery of authorship of two Mass settings. Is Missa Mater Patris an early or late work, and should the Missa Da pacem, revealed in 1972 as the work of Noel Bauldewyn, still be attributed to Josquin? Peter Phillips’s liner notes cut through these musicological Gordian knots and the glowing, assured performances he draws from his expert voices make the best possible argument. The recording quality is excellent, and no self-respecting collector of renaissance polyphony on disc will want to be without these exquisitely moulded and burnished performances.
