This immaculate recording features a choir of 45 singers with a separate team of 10 soloists, including female altos, who share the arias, in addition to Georg Poplutz and Matthias Winckhler who take the roles of the Evangelist and Christ. Recorded in the Evangelical Protestant Christuskirche in Mainz, the choir and orchestra’s home, the performance has a liturgical feel. It is scrupulously faithful to the Bärenreiter edition of the 1736 score – every detail is fastidiously crafted, the soloists are of consistently high quality and the period-instrument orchestra plays beautifully. It has moments of great tenderness, but for me the scenes of conflict need more urgency than this somewhat reserved interpretation provides.
