The next release isn’t over-burdened with taste either: Italian Nights sees Jonas Kaufmann warbling popular Italian hits from opera to popera in the vast Berlin Waldbüne. Offto a foggy start with ‘Cielo e mar’ (La Gioconda), our hero warms up vocally as he romps through songs from ‘Non ti scordar di me’ to ‘Volare’. Jolly though it might all be, it remains a rainy day in Germany rather than a sun-kissed frolic along the Amalfi coast. Guest star Anita Rachvelishvili sounds almost more baritonal than her host, but she does have a knack with a song, making even the ghastly ‘Caruso’ sound good. As an evening I’m sure it was a fun night out, but as a CD it’s a curious release. Maybe they’ll get 20,000 sales from the people that went.
