The Polish organist/composer Feliks Nowowiejski (1877-1946) was a pupil of Max Bruch and his early career centred on Berlin. The Franz Eggert organ in the Paulus-kirche, where Nowowiejski was organist, no longer exists, but the one in Herz-Jesu-Kirche has been beautifully restored. The CD features Nowowiejski’s Third Symphony alongside three colourful Christmas Carol Fantasies. Elzbietz Karolak’s performances radiate warmth and character in music which is a curious mix of liturgical melodies and Polish folk idiom, particularly in the middle movement of the Symphony ‘Recitativo-Pastorale (Le miracle)’ – an evocation of the miracle at Lourdes. A thoroughly enjoyable (if brief) introduction to this composer.
