Tempi here are broadly similar to the conductor’s Leipzig DVD of the same piece for the same label, filmed five years previously. However, while the earlier performance seemed episodic and slightly pedestrian, this one teems with life. Perhaps this is down to the unique, temporal make-up of the orchestra; perhaps the sense of occasion, dedicated as it was to the memory of Claudio Abbado and neatly completing the older conductor’s compelling cycle. With fine solo singing and choral contributions, and excellent presentation and sound, this is worth watching.
