The bulk of this set is taken up with new orchestral pieces by the composer of Algerian heritage, whose writing always combines a raw force with considerable subtlety. A Celestial Map of the Sky was commissioned by Manchester Grammar School to mark its 500th anniversary. Inspired by two Dürer woodcuts, its tightly syncopated form makes some demands of the young choir, but so lucid is the writing, and so cleverly interspersed with more thoughtful moments that the whole passes with deceptive ease. As a tribute to the joys and the struggles of learning, it is hard to beat.
