Sunwook Kim (winner of the 2006 Leeds International Piano Competition) gave a rather mixed performance of Beethoven’s Third Concerto at the 2013 Proms (with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Karabits). Here he is with the major orchestra of his homeland, the Seoul Philharmonic, in a performance that allows much subtlety to come to the fore. The booklet includes an interview with both Kim and Chung. Kim is unrelentingly modest in his responses, and perhaps this modesty is reflected in his playing. These are concert performances, and occasionally it shows in the ensemble. Perhaps the live element inspired the risk of the very slow Adagio, resulting in a markedly crepuscular feel. The finale receives a variegated account, with the occasional lapse in energy. The Fifth Symphony receives a rather workaday reading.
