Ebb of Winter, one of Max’s last ‘Orkney’ works written just three years ago and new to disc, is paired with one of his best known which gives the disc its title. Both are endlessly evocative, and if a third tone poem, Last Door Of Light, is not quite at the same level of inspiration, it makes a useful coupling and receives as committed and polished a performance as its sister pieces. The disc also includes two works for solo guitar, well played: a substantial Orcadian suite Hill Runes and an arrangement of the ubiquitous Farewell To Stromness. Excellent sound.
