Recorded al fresco in front of the magnificent Theatre Antique d’Orange, this well-planned, well-executed programme impresses but also frustrates. The Berlioz overture signals immediately what a fine ensemble Chung has here, dashing and fleet. With many different partners, Argerich has long made the Poulenc a party piece of hers and with Angelich gives a super-charged performance to relish. The Saint-Saëns is persuasive and vivid, albeit with an underwhelming organ. Sadly, picture and sound are not perfectly synchronised, which is especially distracting in the concerto.
