In an age of magnificent Bach interpreters, Maestro Suzuki’s refined readings glow with quiet author- ity. His trademark luminosity and elegance, persuasive rather than autocratic, encourages sensitive soloists, passionately delicate playing, and a gloriously nimble chorus. There’s significant, arguably inauthentic, acoustic bloom yet the pellucid clarity of the SACD recording defies criticism. With the A major (BWV 234) and F major (BWV 233) Masses appears Marco Giuseppe Peranda’s Missa in A minor, a Kyrie and Gloria from which Bach borrowed and whose example as a contrapuntalist influenced the younger composer. This is a brilliant successor to the equally exquisite volume I.
