More high jinks from the Rossini in Wildbad Festival, where Il viaggio a Reims was recorded in 2014. Thankfully, conductor Antonino Fogliani has much more Rossinian style and the performance sounds appropriately joyous. The three sopranos, Laura Giordano, Sofia Mchedlishvili and Alessandra Marianelli all sound light and bright, and Marianna Pizzolato’s mezzo adds some spice: she’s particularly good in her delicious duet with Maxim Mironov’s Libenskof, his brilliant tenor talking the main line as she flits around him. The lower voices are all good too – in fact there’s not a weak link, and as it’s recorded complete (and is very affordable, to boot) it’s a welcome addition to the catalogue.
