In their second volume of J.S. Bach’s Lutheran Masses, The Sixteen deliver another gracious, thoughtfully realised disc with virtuosic chamber forces and a close yet airy recording credibly suggesting the original soundworld. in this ‘Mass sandwich’, Cantata 79 Gott der Herr ist Sonn’ und Schild is an inspired choice of filler, both for its musical relevance and the central significance of its Lutheran texts. J.S. Bach was far from alone in responding with musical magic to such texts, and in Luther Cantatas the devotional qualities of Telemann’s own staunch Lutheranism are explored by Gotthold Schwarz and the Sächsisches Barockorchester with the Bach Consort Leipzig in richly nuanced readings, paced with poise and understated elegance and informed by a profound appreciation of the message enshrined within these musical homilies.
