Charpentier created what must have been, on first hearing, shockingly dramatic oratorios exploring the despair of St Peter denying Christ and Abraham preparing to sacrifice Isaac. This disc from La Nuova Musica, Sacrifices, places them alongside Carissimi’s similarly anguished Historia di Jephte, each made more telling by a serene interleaving with instrumental works by Brossard. The soft-edged clarity of this smoothly sonorous recording is a tasteful foil to the high levels of emotion, definitely and effectively conveyed by an excellent cast.
