The perils of religious and political persecution inspire a highly original programme of Byrd, Tallis, Cardoso, de Christo, de Monte and Peerson from Contrapunctus, The Cry of the Oppressed, wherein the despair of English Catholics is likened to the plight of Portugal under Spanish rule, with Latin a common language of mourning. Their deeply dolorous, sensitive, warm-toned singing is recorded with a beautiful breadth, but by the end of Byrd’s monumental Infelix ego I was losing the will to live.
