Another unmissable discovery from this enterprising label sees Solti tearing characteristically into the last chapter of the Ring. He is abetted by a superb cast: Wolfgang Windgassen and Gottlob Frick are on top form, as is a young Gwyneth Jones as Wellgunde. The star of the evening, though, is an incandescent Birgit Nilsson: she arguably never sang this repertoire better than on this summer evening at the 1963 Proms, an event captured in glorious sound. Essential listening.
