This disc includes 14 short Latin motets which, while never hugely complex in their part-writing, do use the six or occasionally seven voices to create an atmosphere of grandeur wholly appropriate for St Mark’s Basilica, Venice, for whose Byzantine-style surroundings they were composed. Together with Gabrieli’s Missa Vexilla Regis, the origins of which remain uncertain, the Cantori di San Marco under Marco Gemmani have set down a fascinating disc of little-known material which here receives its premiere recordings. The performances are lively and intelligent, and Gemmani is ever alert to the spatial effects of the music. Closely recorded, the listener feels very much among these excellent mixed-voiced singers.
