I’m not sure for whom this mixed bag of a programme is intended. Recorded in 1981 in the wake of the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer and presumably released that year, the programme includes music from their marriage ceremony as well as from two other significant royal services held at St Paul’s: the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebration (1977) and the Queen Mother’s 80th Birthday Service. All the material is very well managed in the cathedral’s cavernous acoustics. One or two of the individual items are especially interesting – Mathias’s Let the people praise thee, O God, for example – but I can’t imagine one would ever want this CD other than as a souvenir of the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir at the start of the 1980s. That said, it’s good to be reminded of what a fine organist (soloist and accompanist) Christopher Dearnley was; his playing on this CD is a special delight.
