Recorded live at Orkney’s St Magnus Festival, Wells’ account proves this 1974 theatre piece still has the power to shock. Filmed flashbacks work well, and create explicit links between Miss Donnithorne and Mary Shelley in Colin Riley’s piece Science Fictions. This work, and Sally Bingham’s Mary Anning, are much less ambitious and, lip-synced, come across less well. Beautifully filmed and with fine (stereo-only) sound.
