The concept behind this disc is a worthy one: to compile a list of notable solo piano works performed by famous pianists and present it in a simple format, suitable for the early-stage pianist. Child’s play, right? Not quite. The content is excellent; the 27 tracks include stalwarts of the repertoire such as Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca and Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ sonata performed by Jenő Jandó, Grieg’s March of the Trolls by Balázs Szokolay and Debussy’s Golliwogg’s Cakewalk by François-Joël Thollier, among many other superbly played short pieces. However, a passerby wanting to purchase this disc wouldn’t be aware of its contents, because the works are only listed in the liner notes, not on the back of the CD. The notes group the pieces thematically, with a keyword for each (for example, Flight of the Bumblebee is ‘buzz’). This is an effective learning aid, and the idea is that the parent and/or teacher can use these words as springboards for discussion of the music.
