An inspired idea to precede the Requiem with a pair of Schütz works that must have informed Brahms’ masterpiece, as recorded live at the Edinburgh Festival. Gardiner’s smooth, lean approach works well in a vividly alive performance, but his soloists sound as if they were less than comfortable on this particular evening.
