Bax chooses an unusual programme, one that is not entirely effective. He is more successful in the serious, early op10 Ballades, finding in them both grave beauty and emotional power; the elusive op76 pieces also come off well. The Paganini Variations makes an uncomfortable bedfellow, however, and while posing no technical problems for this gifted young artist, require the same seriousness of purpose he brings earlier in the disc in order to succeed.
