With two concertos new to her discography, Pires’ first disc for Onyx is something very special. This is playing of great poise and depth – the slow movement of the c minor is jaw-dropping in its profound concentration. Harding coaxes lithe, transparent playing from his Swedish colleagues: there’s an almost ‘period’ feel from the athletic strings, characterful winds and insistent timpani. Clear, warm sound.
