In Paradisum was written while Nowowiejski was in hiding from the Gestapo. It was his last composition before the debilitating stroke of December 1941. The piece takes the familiar form of Seven Last Words from the Cross, with a spoken text by Delfieux (in French) and a small choral element. The fine modern organ of the Jerusalem Mother of God church in Warsaw was originally built for Duisburg-Essen university and reconstructed in the Polish capital in 2010. It is an instrument of quiet power and Adamczyk keeps it respectfully in check throughout the piece, which he does without terremoto effects or excessively anguished cries. It is possible to listen without the speech tracks, but unless one provides meditative silences in their place, something fundamental is lost.
