Vincent Genvrin offers an attractive and arguably more successfully realised adjunct to his recently launched survey of Saint-Saëns’s complete works for organs and motets, with this compendium of vocal motets and instrumentals originally composed for the composer’s beloved La Madeleine Church in Paris. As before, Genvrin strives for subtlety and nuance in music aptly described by the otherwise somewhat quixotic booklet note as being ‘perfectly in tune with the church, but not out of place in the opera’. The result is an appealing and often sublimely beautiful recital of undeservedly overlooked music.
