This CD reunites Philip Stopford with Truro Cathedral, where he spent some time as organ scholar. He has matured mightily as a composer in the interim, writing highly singable music that doesn’t shy away from pop sensibility, as in the opening Episcopal Jubilate or even the Lord’s Prayer he wrote for Truro back in 1996. The relationship comes up to date in the beautiful Truro Evening Canticles from 2011. Top billing rightly goes to the title piece, a baptismal hymn of surpassing simplicity that nonetheless fills the heart. Exquisitely sung here, as is the deceptively difficult ‘dropping’ theme of Drop, drop slow tears. Music of rare quality.
